Milan - RTW SS13 - Fendi

City: Milan
Season: Ready-To-Wear, Spring/Summer 2013
Show: Fendi

This past fashion week, Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Fendi put a fun and decidedly futuristic spin on the eighty-seven-year-old house’s luxurious designs. With references such as the Sistine Chapel and an exclusively handmade approach, however, it wasn’t all to-the-future! dynamism. The colour palette was lively and warm, what I think of as being quintessentially Italian, and I assume this was down to the Sistine Chapel and its many frescoes. The shapes were sculptural and sharply geometric, nowhere more so than on Caroline Brasch Nielsen (bottom centre), in blouse and culotte-like mini skirt, and Agne Konciute (centre left), in a busy but beautiful halter neck dress. This was of course a Fendi show, however, so nothing was quite as bountiful as those textures: the tactile jackets, the panelled tailoring, and leather, leather, leather! Want proof? See Ava Smith’s padded honeycomb sweater dress (centre), Jacquelyn Jablonski’s fuzzy teal separates (top left), and, trumpets please, Maria Bradley’s words-cannot-describe leather coat (bottom right). Finally, the paillette-covered confection sported by Joan Smalls (top right) will make for a killer look come nightfall. This was a sumptuous and tactile display, extravagant in texture, colour and shape.
