New York - RTW AW13 - 3.1 Phillip Lim

City: New York
Season: Ready-To-Wear, Autumn/Winter 2013
Show: 3.1 Phillip Lim

Nobody does layering quite like a New Yorker in the colder months, what with going back and forth between freezing city streets and overheated office buildings, and 3.1 Phillip Lim Autumn/Winter 2013 was, appropriately, a lesson in the art of layering. In stark contrast to the likes of, say, Rodarte, the emphasis here was on outerwear and plenty of it, with full-length coats and biker jackets featuring heavily and stamping nearly every look with Lim’s inimitable sense of utilitarian yet feminine cool. Pink accents prevented the more structured looks from veering too far into motocross territory, with Esther Heesch’s textured coat (centre) and Carolina Thaler’s Balenciaga-esque leather jacket (top centre) best showcasing this soft-but-tough colour play. Phillip Lim is one of New York’s foremost young designers, one quietly garnering acclaim for his wearable pieces and accessories such as the highly-coveted Pashli satchel, a favourite among off-duty models. And in fact, with all its artful layering and keen attention to detail, 3.1 Phillip Lim Autumn/Winter 2013 was a collection very much inspired by the off-duty model…even if the likes of Julia Frauche (top left) and Liu Wen (bottom left) were technically on duty. Furthermore, I expect Lina Zhang’s chino-coloured utility jacket (bottom right) will be top of my wishlist come next season.
