New York - RTW AW13 - Rodarte

City: New York
Season: Ready-To-Wear, Autumn/Winter 2013
Show: Rodarte

Rodarte Autumn/Winter 2013 was, for its designers, a collection fuelled by nostalgia. ‘Back home to Santa Cruz’ was how Laura Mulleavy described the collection, with sister Kate adding that 'we always knew we’d do a collection about where we grew up.’ They have of course alluded to their Californian upbringing in previous Rodarte collections, but never quite so explicitly as this; tie-dye dresses and surf-ravaged tresses abounded, as did asymmetry and off-the-shoulder cuts. Agne Konciute’s gown was a real scene-stealer (centre), featuring a floral applique neck that gradually gave way to more riotous tie-dye, while Cara Delevingne (top right) and Lindsey Wixson (bottom right) wore monochromatic looks that were less beach-friendly and more in line with the Mulleavy sisters’ signature alt-girl aesthetic. The idea of tie-dye for Autumn/Winter is a tad unorthodox, however, and there was very little focus on outerwear - blame California for that - with Nadja Bender (centre left) wearing one of the collection’s few jackets. Overall, my favourite look was that worn by Japanese model Chiharu Okunugi (centre right), one of Autumn/Winter 2013’s freshest new faces.
