London - RTW SS13 - Giles

City: London
Season: Ready-To-Wear, Spring/Summer 2013
Show: Giles

I find Giles Deacon to be the sartorial equivalent of Marmite. You either love his designs or balk at them, pulling WTF? faces all round. I for one love Giles and am of the opinion that, along with Christopher Kane, Giles Deacon is one of the most formidable talents designing out of London at present. His designs are witty, colourful and very full-on (minimalism is most certainly not on the menu) and Spring/Summer 2013 was a true testament to this. Shatter prints, as seen on Katlin Aas (top centre) and others, set the tone for the collection, before giving way to the flamboyant 1950s-gone-awry shapes seen on Erjona Ala (bottom right) and sometime Victoria’s Secret angel Doutzen Kroes (centre), a favourite of the designer and wearer of the most lavish, voluminous gown in the entire collection. Laser-cutting techniques mimicked delicate lace - see Elsa Sylvan (centre left) and Frida Gustavsson (bottom left) - and elsewhere bejewelled mini dresses and feathery prints put the finishing touches to a decadent and darkly romantic affair. Furthermore, the make-up was killer, with shocking pink lips lighting up the models’ otherwise bare faces.
