As Michelle Obama’s go-to for an Inauguration-appropriate gown, Jason Wu can normally be relied upon for elegant pieces with a decidedly demure feel. However this latest collection is something of a departure for Wu, with a dominatrix vibe punctuating almost every look, from Stef van der Laan’s leather pinafore dress (bottom left) to Melodie Monrose’s studded bralet (bottom centre). Even Ms Karlie Kloss, the quintessential all-American girl, was transformed into a Helmut Newton heroine (centre). Wu’s style signatures are still very much in evidence, however, even amongst all of this seldom-seen kink: tailored city shorts, well-cut cigarette pants, separates worthy of a Park Avenue princess heading to afternoon tea at The Carlyle. Yes, even with a generous helping of sex Jason Wu is still a resolutely uptown brand - these are clothes for the most monied of courtesans, those fearless enough to mix leather and lace in with their silks and tweeds. Strictly speaking, I’m not a Jason Wu girl, and yet that semi-sheer confection worn by Anais Mali (top left) does seem to be calling to me…
