New York - RTW SS13 - Rodarte

City: New York
Season: Ready-To-Wear, Spring/Summer 2013
Show: Rodarte

The Rodarte girls’ background in costume design (Black Swan, check, the New York City Ballet, check) means that they are forever pushing the fashion envelope, favouring artful and impeccably constructed pieces over trend-led dressing. For Spring/Summer 2013, Kate and Laura Mulleavy put a so-called ‘modern medieval’ spin on the traditional waisted silhouette: note the Boleyn-like bodice on first face Jessica Stam (bottom centre), as well as the to-die-for marquetry cinching Katlin Aas’ otherwise free-flowing silk gown (top centre). King Arthur and his knights were a clear influence, as were role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, but don’t get out your jousting sticks just yet, kids. In amongst all the pageantry there was also a healthy dollop of Mulleavy sister weirdness - just check out the BRAIN prints on Aymeline Valade (top right) and Aline Weber (top left). The statement leather jackets worn by Tilda Lindstam (bottom right) et al further stamped the collection with a Blade Runner vibe. None of these things should really work together. However in the capable hands of the Mulleavys, they somehow do.
